11/5/09 08:26 pm - Chase Credit Cards

Note to self... I'm typing this up because I'm having difficulties believing this really happened. It sounds like one of the horror stories that chain letters are made of.

I have a Chase MasterCard that my partner and I been using for a while, and we've been quite happy with the cash rewards (3% on gas stations, restaurants, office supply stores, hardware stores, and home improvement centers, and 1% on everything else). The expiration date on the card was 10/09. We have excellent credit, so we figured they would send us another card.

Now, November has been here for a few days, and there's no new card, so my partner called up Chase to ask about it. The person on the phone told him that they did send the card and it was activated on Oct 18. It was a strange date because we have known all of October that our card was about to expire, so we've been watching for it. There was no chance that we could've received the card in October and activated it on that date.

After querying further, the Chase representative claimed that the card was "auto-activated" after 60 days of being sent. This is just so utterly wrong on so very many levels that I had my partner ask them to turn off auto-activation on our cards. I keep an updated fraud alert on my account due to identity theft. Even if companies are normally lax, things like this shouldn't happen to my account. My partner was escalated to a few different people who said that there's no way to turn off auto-activation and that this is just the way that the system is. Eventually, he was handed to their security and fraud division which said that they didn't realize credit cards were being automatically activated. They promised to look into it, but that's understandably all they can promise.

In any case, my partner extracted from someone that this is the place to send a written complaint:
